At St Mary Star of the Sea, we aim to provide pupils with a high quality education in English. Our writing curriculum is rooted in reading, with all writing opportunities linked to a high quality class text. We ensure the text provides an opportunity for the pupils to delve deeper into the project they are learning about. See the links below for how this is planned out.

Reading

At St. Mary Star of the Sea we regognise the importance of reading in all areas of the the curriculum. Therefore we strive to put reading at the heart of all we do in order to create children that 'Learn to read then read to learn'. To help us do this we use an online platform called 'Accelerated Reader'.

'Accelerated Reader' is a powerful tool for monitoring and managing independent reading practice while promoting reading for pleasure. At it's heart, Accelerated Reader is simple. A child reads a book, takes an online quiz and gets immediate feedback. Children respond to regular feedback and are motivated to make progress with their reading skills.

Our Library

Our school library has been designed to be a place where children can come and let their imagination take them anywhere. We have a lunchtime library club and the chidlren are able to take books home. Reading is at the heart of all we do...

Accelerated Reader

Accelerated reader is used in Keystage Two and for those children who are ready to move on from bookbands. Your child will be provided with there own username and a password and can then access this from home by following this link: http://ukhosted130.renlearn.co.uk/6709796/

Writing @ SMSS

At St. Mary Star of the Sea, we understand that writing is an essential part of the curriculum; we’re ambitious about what all children can achieve, and we strive to create exciting and stimulating writing opportunities for all children.  We aim to ensure that all children leave our school with a passion for writing and a high level of English knowledge and skills that they can apply in a variety of subjects and situations. In order for children to be able to do this, we immerse them in a rich-text environment that provides models and examples of high-quality writing which children can examine and explore. We use a text-based approach that is carefully planned and structured.

Spelling:

We follow the Read Write Inc Spelling programme. This is a 15minute a day programme which goes from Year 2 - Year 6. Read Write Inc is a spelling programme based on proven strategies of teacher modelling followed by partner work, to embed learning. The programme covers all the National Curriculum word structures and spelling requirements. It is:

  • Built around a series of short, progressive activities
  • Uses partner work to help children learn effectively and recall what they have learnt
