Maths at SMSS

'Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still; teach the righteous and they will add to their learning.' Proverbs 9:9

Our Intent:

At St Mary Star of the Sea, we want all pupils to experience the beauty, power and enjoyment of mathematics and develop a sense of curiosity about the subject with a clear understanding. We foster positive ‘can do’ attitudes and we promote the fact that ‘We can all do maths!’ We believe all children can achieve in mathematics, and teach for secure and deep understanding of mathematical concepts through manageable steps. We use mistakes and misconceptions as an essential part of learning and provide challenge through rich and sophisticated problems. Children will spend time becoming true masters of content, applying and being creative with new knowledge in multiple ways.

This vision is achieved by:

  • becoming fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics so that they develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately;
  • solving problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of problems with increasing sophistication, including in unfamiliar contexts and to model real-life scenarios;
  • reasoning mathematically by following a line of enquiry and develop and present a justification, argument or proof using mathematical language;
  • appreciating number and number operations, which enables mental calculations and written procedures to be performed efficiently, fluently and accurately to be successful in mathematics.

EYFS

In the EYFS it is essential that children develop a strong grounding in number. This provides the necessary building blocks and secure understanding to excel mathematically. In the Early Years children develop a deep understanding of the numbers to 10. Children lern to use a wide range of manipulatives in a variety of ways. In addition to this, children develop their spatial reasoning skills including shape, space and measures. (For more information, see our Early Years Curriculum page).

We follow White Rose Maths from Reception.

Key Stages 1 and 2

We follow White Rose primary maths. The scheme and resources are designed to instil a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts using a range of inspiring classroom activities.

We follow a mastery approach to teaching maths. This means we;

  • Put numbers first: numbers are at theheart of the scheme, because we believe confidence with numbers is the first step to competency in the curriculum as a whole.
  • Puts depth before breadth: we reinforce knowledge again and again.
  • Encourages collaboration: children can progress through the maths scheme as a group, supporting each other as they learn.
  • Focuses on fluency, reasoning and problem solving: it gives children the skills they need to become competent mathematicians.
